I am back.....again.....again. Let's just say last year got away from me in the blogging department. So much I wish I had taken the time to share. Believe it or not, even though I was silent most of the year here, God's mission through us continued to grow and flourish. I think that is a sign of something--I am not sure what exactly but it definitely points towards God's faithfulness and love for His children who are hurting in this world.
So, today I wanted to recap what Margaret's Hope Chest did as far as quilt giving from November 2014-December 2015:

2 quilts were donated for fundraising auctions.
7 quilts were given to people who found themselves without a permanent home.
7 quilts were given to Pregnancy Resource Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
8 quilts were given to the Veterans Home in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
8 quilts were given to people grieving a loss in their life.
8 quilts were given to individuals getting treatment for cancer.
10 quilts were given to In The Image in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
12 heart-themed quilts were gifted to Mitchell's Journey and distributed to kids with heart disease.
16 quilts found a new home in Matamoros, Mexico.
22 baby quilts were given to the Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan for families who welcomed a child with Down Syndrome into their family.
23 quilts traveled to Guatemala for children in an orphanage.
45 quilts were given to men, women and children who had a family member in prison.
99 quilts were given to the postpartum depression mother-baby program at Pine Rest in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

In 2015 we gave the gift of HOPE and comfort to 267 individuals!

Over the past 8 years we have given a gift of HOPE and comfort to 2,397 individuals. Praise God.

I want to come back later this week and share about some other things that happened in 2015 at Margaret's Hope Chest and what we are working on for 2016.diplofamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02528751165395780904noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6133065134728513362.post-30944318111296816952015-09-02T19:39:00.003-07:002015-09-02T19:39:46.769-07:00Back in The Saddle......I am back....again. Let's just pretend that I wrote blog posts for the past 7 months shall we? I feel like a stranger to this space. I hardly know where to begin but I guess it is time for us to get reacquainted because the work of Margaret's Hope Chest has not stopped even though my blogging has.
Hi, my name is Carin and together with my mom (Carol) we run Margaret's Hope Chest--a quilting non-profit that strives to give HOPE and comfort to hurting people through the gift of a homemade quilt.
Outside of quilting, I have a busy family life. My husband and I have 6 amazing children. We adopted our two youngest daughters from China--Pearl in 2013, and Molly just last month!
Here is the most updated picture of our family, taken about 2 weeks ago:

And here I am with Pearl and Molly--also known as Double Trouble. (they are 4 months apart in age--Pearl will be 5 in October and Molly with be 5 in February)

Within weeks of writing the past post in January, I decided to start making custom quilts for people to help pay for some of our adoption costs. I have never really sold quilts before so this was a new arena for me. Here is my take on making custom quilts--a fun challenge but you will never be able to charge as much as they are worth. See this panda quilt?

I designed the whole thing. Fun, but a bit time consuming. It was for another adoptive family that met their daughter a few months before we met Molly.

I also made about 5 more between Februaury and May. Phew. It was exhausting but we paid all of the adoption fees and the goal was met.

It is now time to move back into VOLUNTEER quilting--my favorite kind!

So here is where we stand:
We have given away 2,310 quilts over the past 8 years!!!! I would estimate that since January we given away around 50 quilts. We will be giving away another 30 at a prison in late October. We have 24 quilts ready to be given to the mother's postpartum depression program----but we still need help!

We are looking for volunteers to make a quilt for the postpartum depression program at Pine Rest (Click underlined sentence for more information). I am described before what this program means to me personally-but since we are getting reaquinted here, I will share again briefly my own struggles with PPD.
After my 3rd and 4th pregnancies I experienced PPD and anxiety. It was not a great place to be. Without my husband staying home with me for 6 weeks, I am not sure I would have made it. Many of the ladies who attend this program do not have a husband or any other support person who can stay home and take care of them--and so this program is literally saving their lives and possibly the lives of their babies. We have heard over and over again that these quilts are a HUGE comfort to these moms---and a HUGE symbol of HOPE! If you are able--could you please sign up to make a quilt for a mom? Email me with the month that you can help and I will reply with the directions.
Basically---any size, bright cheerful colors and designs--something that shouts "You are going to make it---don't give up HOPE!"
*You can make the quilt and send it to us at any time before the assigned month*
It's a new year. I am living in a new country. Yes, our family moved once more and now we are just across the Texas border in good old Mexico. We lived in Mexico (different city) about 10 years ago. It's good to be back. Although being this close to the border, we slip over to Texas for most of our needs and wants.
I have a new home situation too--one that I hope will be more conducive to quilting. I am no longer homeschooling my kids--the four oldest leave the house around 7am and don't return until 4pm. That leaves me with one child. I haven't had one child in the house for 11 years. It takes a little getting used to but I can already feel my creative 'sinuses', if you will, opening back up.

So, I have a new life of sorts. I hope to spend more time here sharing and encouraging others to help us spread HOPE and comfort.

I actually have done quite a bit of quilting over the past few months--but not for Margaret's Hope Chest. I made and sold several quilts to help fund raise for our upcoming adoption. I thought I would share those with you today.
Earlier this year we asked for help creating HEART themed quilts. We had a wonderful response to that request and last week I was able to mail these 12 quilts to Mitchell's Journey. In 2005, Mitchell was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a catastrophic muscle wasting disease which results in progressive muscle deterioration and is fatal by late teens/early twenties. He died in March of 2013. In December 2013, as part of their healing journey, Mitchell's family returned to the hospital where he was cared for (in Utah) to give quilts to children there. This Christmas, they plan to return and these quilts will help them to continue healing through serving. Thank you to all who sent one of these beautiful quilts. I am sure they will be a wonderful gift to 12 amazing children.

It has been way too many months since I have updated our blog and about a year since I have given an update on where our beloved quilts have gone!
I have good excuses for not blogging (NOT ENOUGH TIME!) but I do apologize for not keeping everyone in the loop on recent happenings. We do have a Facebook group that I update more regularily so check that out if you haven't already.

The big news is that we are up to 2130 quilts given away! That means that since my last post exactly four months ago we have given away 130 quilts! Wow! I have been to two prison giveaways in Michigan since then--and loved every minute of my time with the inmates and their children.

Here is a rundown of everything else happening over the last 12 months:

This quilt was constructed by my mom.
She made it from fabrics that reminded her of the housecoats that her mom wore around the house many years ago--soft, flowery fabrics.
My mom thought of her 'Aunt' Thelm as she carefully fit the pieces together. ('Aunt' Thelm is actually married to my grandpa's cousin Herm which would make her my mom's 2nd cousin--made more sense to just call her 'aunt' because their families were so close).
Aunt Thelm has colon cancer and is 86 years old. As you can imagine, there is not much that can be done. She is receiving palliative care and waiting....
We knew we were approaching our 2000th quilt given and we decided that it HAD to go to Aunt Thelm. She was my grandma Margaret's best friend. So close in fact, that in 1947 my grandparents and Aunt Thelm and Uncle Herm almost had a double wedding! But as the story goes, my grandparents were 'over-eager' and got married two weeks before Herm and Thelm.

If my grandma were still alive and well enough to, she would have cared for her friend Thelm in any way she could. My mom was my grandma's hands--creating a quilt of comfort and HOPE. It was very sweet to see my mom give it to her.

It was also special to see my mom embraced by two people who bring back such good memories of her own parents. She didn't want to get up from the couch :) I don't blame her!

And so, a big milestone for Margaret's Hope Chest---2000 quilts. 2000 people just like Aunt Thelm--grasping for HOPE and comfort is an uncomfortable and scary world. Thank you Jesus for your blessings on our work.diplofamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02528751165395780904noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6133065134728513362.post-51972375877499123072014-06-13T08:34:00.001-07:002014-06-13T08:34:09.715-07:00Lots to Share Once again, I have been neglecting this blog! I can't believe how time is flying by me! We move out of Bermuda to Michigan a week from today. Perhaps I will blog more consistently there?!

My mom has been faithfully delivering a stack of quilts to the Mother/Baby program every few weeks. Each stack a unique gift of HOPE and love. Thanks to those who continue to support this program.
I haven't written here in an embarrassingly long time! I have a laundry list of excuses which include my family is moving internationally yet again, the weather in Bermuda has been amazing this winter/spring and so we have spent as much time outside as possible, I have finished several personal projects over the past few months, and last but not least I am the busy mother of five small children!

Don't mistake lack of blog posts for lack of quilting work though. I have been busy trying to use up as much fabric as I can before we move! I spent all of January and February cutting my scraps and smaller pieces into 3 inch squares.

Now, when I want to throw together a scrap quilt, I just head for the bin and have some fun!

Here is a quilt I made using those 3 inch squares and some blocks that someone donated to Margaret's Hope Chest. It was fun putting it all together and I am sure it will make a little girl very happy!

The backing was a piece of donated fabric as well. Yeah!

Most evenings you will find me with this monstrosity on my lap, slowly picking out the stitches of 100's of yo-yo blocks. Someone donated this antique yo yo quilt to MHC almost two years ago (gulp!). I decided to take it apart and reuse the intact yo-yo's to create something new. It has been a fun challenge and I love inventing stories in my head about who made this quilt and where each of the 100's of fabrics came from. Maybe I will be finished with it in another two years!!!

Look at these BRILLIANT quilts which were delivered to the Mother/Baby program this week!! Again, I will gush over how each is so unique and special, just like the moms who will choose one to become a symbol of hope in their lives.
Please notice this quilt:

It is the first (of many) made from the log cabin blocks we collected earlier this year! Isn't it cheerful?!

A big thank you to those who donated these quilts of the last month. You make our mission a joy!

We always need more quilts for this program. This is an ongoing need. Please see the details HERE and consider helping out!
the Hearts of Hope project: 1.) The pixelated heart can be any size--it
just depends on how big you make your squares.
2.) Finished
tops/quilts can also be any size but our suggested size in 40X60.
3.)
If you have a favorite heart pattern feel free to use it!
4.) If you want to make a rag quilt that is fine too.
5.) Marilyn, who has a long-arm quilting machine, has
volunteered to finish off your quilts for you--you just have to send
the quilts to her. Here is her address: <span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" data-reactid=".m.1:3:1:$comment10151950520212012_10151950521697012:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.0:$comment-body">
This program we are calling 'Hearts of HOPE' and hopefully, it will benefit many, many KIDS!!!
The quilts that we make from this collection will go to three separate programs:
1. Kids of prisoners. This summer and fall we will travel to THREE prison camps and give quilts to approx. 150 boys and girls who have a parent in prison. If you have been reading here for awhile you know that I love these camps and these families. This is a HUGE commitment but one we are confident that we can handle. Currently, we have about 5 boy quilts and 25 girl quilts.

2. Village of Hope in Guatemala. We sent them a group of 20 quilts last year when they opened their new facility. They have now started constructing more buildings to house more precious orphan children who are HIV+. My daughter Anne and I will be traveling to Village of Hope in November for a service project. We would love to give them an additional 20 quilts for these new children.

3. Mitchell's Journey--In July of 2005 Mitchell was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular
Dystrophy, a catastrophic muscle wasting disease which results in
progressive muscle deterioration and is fatal by late teens/early
twenties. By the age of 10 it was that discovered Mitchell's heart
function had deteriorated much sooner than expected. In less than a
year he passed away from acute heart failure.
Mitchell's family has asked for quilts to distribute to other children who are in the hospital with heart conditions. We are happy to help this family on their journey to healing and understanding. Here is something Mitchell's mom wrote about their quilt giving on Dec. 24, 2013:
SWALLOWED UP IN SERVICE
On December 24th,
just as we were about to spend time at home as a family we delivered
some gifts and quilts to Primary Children’s Hospital CICU (the same
place that cared for our little boy). Nobody has cardiac failure on
their schedule so you almost always end up unprepared to stay there.
With that in mind we took some quilts that were donated to Mitchell's
Journey and other gifts we gathered along with messages of hope to give
to some of the families that found themselves there Christmas Eve.

We would like to involve as many Mitchell’s Journey followers as are
interested next year and try to bless as many lives as humanly possible.

These quilts were donated by loving hands and hearts from
Pipestone Minnesota. A follower of Mitchell’s Journey, Nichole Rieck,
who has since become a dear friend to our family mobilized people in her
community to help Mitchell’s Journey last spring and the echo of that
effort continued on this day as these quilts found a home and tender
hearts to comfort. A few of these quilts were made by Mavis Holt, an
87 year old woman, who hand sewed the most intricate works of warmth and
art. Karla Whipple, also from Pipestone, Nichole, and others
generously made beautiful quilts and donated them in hopes that it might
help.

Our greatest desire was that those who found
themselves away from the comfort of home and the flickering light of a
fireplace but instead lay under the flashing lights of monitors and
endless beeps found a little comfort that night.

As we parked
the car and walked to the hospital I found myself struggling to breathe.
For a moment it was hard to go back there. Part of me wanted to run
down the hall in desperate search of my son. My knees were weak and my
heart was racing as my eyes began to swell. Even though it has been
almost a year, it felt like we were just there a few days ago. But as
we walked toward the building and I saw my wife and kids cheerful and
anxious to help others, my tears turned from sorrow to love and
appreciation. Suddenly my heart, which moments ago, was heavy as lead
became light as snow.

I don’t know many things, but what I do
know is our sorrows can be swallowed up in the service of others. The
moment we set aside our own hurts to lift someone else, who also hurts,
both burdens are made light.

Isn't that beautiful?? We too discovered that our sorrows can be swallowed up in service to others.

So, my friends, we have so much work to do!!! Let's start with these fun and easy HEART projects!!
Project #1--Pixelated Heart. This is one so easy. All you need is lots of squares! My squares were 3 inches but you can choose any size you have handy. I separated the the rows so you can see the pattern in each row. This project can be for a boy or a girl.

Sorry I didn't trim my threads--I only have so much time each day!!

If you choose this project you have three options--send us just the pixelated heart, add a few borders to the pixelated heart and then send the finished top to us, or finish the whole quilt and send it to us. Of course, we would love as many finished quilts as possible but we also understand that the time, materials, and talent aren't always there so do what you can!!

Project #2- Be Good to Your Heart Block (by Amy Smart)

This block tutorial on Amy's blog Diary of a Quilter is great. I followed it last night (and this morning) to make this block. * There are many steps and you do need to read very carefully though. *
This makes a 12.5 inch block that I think is just perfect for this project.
These blocks can be boy themed or girl themed. I will be working up a boy themed one tonight just for fun.
Please make as many as you can and send them to us. We will assemble them into tops and finish the quilts off. What a special gift they will make to any of the children listed above.
Share your work with others and encourage them to join in!

'A Mother's Hope' is one year old! We have given over 100 quilts to mothers who are attending the Mother/Baby program at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services.

This is comment that one of the mother's who received a quilt left on our blog. I can only imagine that there are 100 other ladies who feel similar to this:
"I was in the hospital back then and I have one of the quilts. You are right about the surprise that came when we were told the quilts were not for our babies. As new moms, we were used to giving everything to our babies. I found it refreshing to keep something for myself. It was an important lesson in self-care. It also gave me permission, in a way, to take care of myself. I think not taking care of ourselves properly is what brought us there in the first place.
It is difficult to put into words what this blanket means to me. I am crying even as I type this. What slays me about my blanket is the hand stitching. The pieces are machine stitched, which takes a lot of time, but the front and the back and the batting are all stitched together by hand. This must have taken a very long time. I often think about the woman who made it and her loving hands doing the stitching. Did she do it in the evening after supper while watching t.v.? Or did she sit around a table and have tea with her seamstress friends at a weekly quilting bee? Did she bring it with her to appointments to work on it while waiting, making use of idle time? I imagine it was a combination of all three. The quilt must have taken a long time. To think that a stranger had enough love for me to cause her to invest all that time really just breaks my heart ( in a good way). Thank you. "

I could write 1000 posts about 'A Mother's Hope' and how much I appreciate our volunteers and the time, money and love they put into their quilts, but I think this comment means more. I love the part where she is imagining who made it. If you want to get involved please e-mail Carin and she can send you the information you will need.
Here are pictures of the many WONDERFUL quilts that have been donated over the past 3 months!!
I think you will agree that each is unique and beautiful and will catch the eye of one of these moms!
Thank you to Sunny, Kathryn, Pam, Carol, Sherry, Brenda, Lea, Ellie, Jody, and Catherine for sharing HOPE in November and December.
These are all the quilts that I finished--as in quilted and bound and ready to go. I have several tops that I finished this year that are waiting their turn but I guess they will make it into the 2014 group.

I had a few personal quilts that I finished but the majority of the quilts were for Margaret's Hope Chest and have already found their new home.
I hope you have had a quilting year that you can look back on with a smile!
I have five children. Three of those children have completed quilts. Two of those children have quilts that are 'in process'. This week I finished piecing Clara's quilt. I have had this fabric for well over a year but I could not decide on a pattern for the quilt. I needed blocks that were big enough to showcase the matryoshka doll fabric. I finally settled on this kaleidoscope block and am quite pleased with the finished product. It will be quilted by a professional :) and then it will finally be placed on her bed.
This week I finished up the bindings on two quilts. The first is made from a panel of Alexander Henry's 'Once Upon a Time' fabric line. I had been holding on to this fabric for a couple of years but decided it would make a perfect quilt for our prison ministry. Like I said last week--we are going to work very hard in 2014 to build up our reserves so that we can participate in as many giveaways as possible.

The second quilt I finished is my December contribution to 'A Mother's Hope'. What I love about this quilt is that it was made from all donated material/blocks. The bright colored blocks in the middle of the quilt were donated and I trimmed them so they would be the same size as the white blocks that I had already cut. The border and backing fabrics were also donated! Three cheers for donations!
Doesn't it make my afternoon reading spot look very inviting? And YES, do find the book 'Chains' by Laurie Anderson and read it. Excellent choice if you like young adult historical fiction.

#1 UPDATE: As of late last week we have received a total of 678 log cabin blocks!!! Wow, I think we can make at least 11 quilts from those blocks. Thank you to each who have contributed in small and large ways. Each block was a step toward the final goal which is to bring HOPE to struggling new moms.

#2 UPDATE: We have received several beautiful quilts for the Mother's Program from those who signed up for the monthly collection. I forgot to ask my dad to take pictures of some of the quilts given in the early part of October (sorry) but this group of quilts pictured below will be the next group to be given.
#4 UPDATE: Looking forward to 2014--we need to replenish our supply of kid's quilts for the prison giveaways. So we will be having a couple of quilt and block collections in January, February and March. I hope that you will be able to save a few hours in the new year for Margaret's Hope Chest.

#5 UPDATE: Our total number of quilts we have given is 1882!!! Almost 2000!!!

she will first make this quilt:

She will name it Bermuda Blues and she will love it and eventually she will give it to a woman she has met on the island who has many health concerns.
Then she will look at that box of 2,280 blue and green squares again and create this quilt:

She will name this quilt 'Bermuda Triangles' and she will love it and eventually she will give it to a woman on the island who was undergoing cancer treatments.
Some time will pass and the quilter will get distracted by other fabric and projects. But one day she will stumble upon that box of 1,280 two inch squares again. She will take them out and create this quilt top:

Inspired to use the remaining 890 squares up and be done with blue and green two inch squares for a VERY LONG TIME she created this quilt top:

And then she will rest because the box of two inch squares is almost empty. You can't make a quilt with 314 two in squares, or can you????

We filled up all of the spaces plus a few!! It amazes me every time I ask for volunteers how quickly people step forward. I know that this is God's work and he sends each of our volunteers to us--the last two weeks have solidified that for me again.
The good news is that we have one more way that you can become involved in this program and it is quite easy. Last year we collected different blocks for Project HOPE and it was quite a hit! To finish off this year we will have one collection of blocks for 'A Mother's Hope'. (for more information on 'A Mother's Hope' please read this post.)
We will be collecting log cabin blocks! Here is one I made yesterday following the tutorial that Amanda Jean put together some years ago.

Hopefully, we will collect 100's of these babies and be able to piece them into quilts and keep this program going!
Here are the details of the collection:
1. Follow Amanda Jean's tutorial (click here). I used it yesterday and it works :)
2. Choose any color but make each block one color--all pink, all green, all yellow etc. This will make it easier for us to put them together into tops. Remember these quilts will be for woman so please don't use juvenile fabrics in the blocks.
3. Deadline for this block collection is November 1st. That gives you a little over a month to make one, two or ten! Trust me, they are addicting--I can't wait to make a few more this afternoon.
4. Send finished blocks to:
Margaret's Hope Chest
630 Griswold SE
Grand Rapids, MI 49507
Once again, thank you for helping us give HOPE to these mothers!

And one more thing--I finished this quilt this week. Someone donated a 'Maisy' panel and coordinating fabric this summer and when I saw it--I grabbed it! I had so much fun putting this together. It will find a new home very soon.
It will be a gift to a young mother who feels like the world is closing in around her. It will give HOPE and comfort to a woman who needs it.
In January, Margaret's Hope Chest starting bringing quilts to the Mother and Baby program at Pine Rest (in Grand Rapids, Michigan). This program serves woman who are experiencing postpartum depression. Over the past 9 months we have dropped off 94 quilts!! We never dreamed that there would be such a need. Each of the quilts has accompanied a struggling mother throughout her time in the program and then it traveled home with her.
I will be honest that we have stuggled to keep up with this need. We do not have a steady influx of quilts approriate for women. My mom has worked very hard to finish off donated tops and create new quilts to make sure that she always has something to bring when they call. I spent my limited time this summer finishing off donated tops.
We would love to continue this program but we need organized help from our friends!

Personally, I have committed to making one quilt a month for 'A Mother's Hope'.
Here is my quilt for September.

I used a charm pack and a couple of coordinating solids to create this.

From start to finish I think it took me 5 days to complete. Not too bad.

I am back with my third 'Finish it up Friday' in a row!! I am still on summer vacation but it looks as if all good things must come to an end because our homeschool curriculum arrived in the mail yesterday. School starts on Monday!

This quilt top was finished in the spring but I brought it back to Michigan to be long-armed quilted. I loved how it turned out. I added the binding this week and now I believe this will belong to my youngest son Josiah. He loves cars and all kinds of transportation (like most boys) and the quilt I started for him last year may never get finished.

I collect all types of transportation fabric. Every time I see a new print I snag a fat quarter or half yard. I will have to show you my collection some time.

I backed this quilt with a light blue voile. I was concerned that it would cause trouble for the long arm quilter but she said it was fine. It gives it a very soft feel. When it isn't 85 degrees here I am sure Josiah will enjoy snuggling under this quilt!

We haven't started homeschooling yet (waiting for our curriculum in the mail) so that means I am still on summer vacation--which means I am allowing myself each afternoon (and evening) to create yummy things! I have wanted to make a fabric banner or pendant (not exactly sure what to call it) for a long time and when we decided to give Pearl her own room I finally had my chance. This would be a perfect project for scraps but I used some charm squares and yardage for the perfect combination of colors.
I love how it brightens her room and draws your eyes up for a change.

Close up on one of the pieces--the coloring is wonky but you get the idea. I decided to back each piece with a neutral color piece of fabric. This added the weight and stability you need when hanging things from the ceiling.

A second finish for the week was this quilt. I had finished the top in the spring but brought it back to Michigan to be quilted. This week I finished attaching the binding by hand-a luxury I haven't afforded myself for quite some time. I love the entire 'Kids at Play' fabric line so I particularily love this quilt. I don't have a use for it right now but I am sure the perfect person will come around!
I am linking up to Amanda Jean's Finish it Friday! Hello from Margaret's Hope Chest!! My friends, we are back in business here! Three months ago I left to take care of a very important adoption from China and although it was harder than I ever imagined it would be I have come up on the other side and I can once again tell you that with certainty that whatever doesn't kill you will indeed make you stronger. And so, here is our family of seven!!

Our daughter Pearl is a wonderful addition to our family and she is beautiful and smart and full of life!!! She was also full of sadness and confusion for the first few months home but I can say that God is faithful to orphans and those who choose to give them a home and family and she is doing better every day. I don't get out of bed without praying for patience and understanding because I need it!

The rest of the family has adjusted well to her and she has more playmates than she wants most days!

Believe it or not, I have been able to complete quite a few quilts this summer. I did not start any new projects because I just did not have the brain power for that but finishing quilt tops takes very little brain power!
Earlier in the spring I had made a hundred or more 'plus' blocks. There was enough to make 3 tops--2 lap-sized and one larger lap-sized.
I straight line quilted them because as I have mentioned before, my machine in Michigan is old and tired and can only muster enough energy to sew in one direction.

Here's one finished--this one went to the postpartum program at Pine Rest.

Here is the second: my mom will have to remind me where this one went.

And here is the third and this I gave to a friend of mine who needs a little bit of quilty hope each day! I love how God shows me each person to give these quilts to. I was actually photographing this quilt at the camp that my kids attend in Michigan and I thought I should give this quilt to Kate. I kid you not, I walk up to the parking lot and there is Kate and her kids. I gave it to her right then and there. I knew it was the right thing to do!

I LOVE this backing fabric--it reminds me of my daughter Anne and that feeling you only have as a child-endless summer days.

Finally, I finished this quilt top which I made over a year ago. I love the bright colors and the bold backing. It also awaits someone who needs some HOPE for the future.

I wanted to let you know that this blog will be quiet for the summer. Our family is headed to China in a WEEK to meet our daughter!! I promised I would formally introduce her to you as soon as we could so here she is!

She is 2 and half and we can not wait to have a toddler in the house again! If you are interested in her adoption story or in watching this trip unfold you can visit our family blog.
Of course, I had to make her a quilt:

In the meantime, the work of Margaret's Hope Chest will continue all summer!!
We have two very active programs right now that we still need help with.
1.) A Mother's Hope--details here.
2.) Prison Ministry Quilts--Kid's quilts of any kind--recommended size 40X60 inches. Boys are especially needed!

Please consider using a bit of your sewing time this summer to make a quilt for one or both of these programs.

I appreciate those who quietly and generously help us all year long. We are so blessed.

Have a wonderful summer!!!diplofamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02528751165395780904noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6133065134728513362.post-75112567699911089502013-05-16T06:19:00.003-07:002013-05-16T07:33:09.022-07:0023 Quilts to Guatemala

In March and April, twenty-three quilts traveled in various suitcases to Village of Hope in Guatemala. Above you see a picture of the building progress as of a couple of week ago--I would assume they are even closer to opening right now. These homes will house Guatemalan children who have special needs (I believe that many of the children have AIDS). They will live with foster parents and live like a family. I love that. We collected and sent quilts for their beds where they will sleep (some for the first time) in a clean and SAFE place. Below are pictures of as many quilts as I have pictures of. So many people were involved in this project---amazing how God works out even the smallest details so that orphans can have some soft and warm to cover their bodies at night.
