The 1000th Quilt, 4 Year Anniversary, Giveaway, a Quilt Top Drive!!!

WARNING: don't skim over this post--read it carefully--you don't want to miss any of what I am saying today!
Happy April Everyone!
April 2011 is an amazing month for Margaret's Hope Chest.
We celebrate our 4th year of service
We celebrate the giving of our 1000th quilt
We are having our first ever "Volunteer Appreciation Giveaway"
and our first ever Quilt Top Collection Drive
Phew, so much to be thankful for.

Let's start with good stuff.
Our volunteers.
Where would we be without ladies all over the country making quilts for little kids with a parent in prison?
Where would we be without quilters from all over the world who have sent us a finished quilt or quilt top over the past 4 years?
Where would we be without quilting angels who drop off or mail us beautifully finished quilts that we get the pleasure of sharing with others?
Daily, I am amazed at where God has led Margaret's Hope Chest over the 4 years! Only He could bring this much joy and HOPE out of my grandma's murder.
So, thank you volunteers--everyone who has sent us something over the past 4 years--deepest thanks and blessings to you.

We sent out our 1000th quilt this week--actually quilts #990-1000 will be going to Japan via someone at Quilter's Newsletter. Woohoo!
So, it order to celebrate those 1000 quilts and thank our volunteers.....

We are having a Giveaway!!!

As a way of saying thanks we are giving away 4 sets of what I am calling
"The Charity Quilter's Basics Bundle"(catchy huh? Yeah, I'm creative like that)

Each bundle includes
1. Four Fat Quarters of Fabric
*Amanda Jean from Crazy Mom Quilts was kind enough to donate these fabrics for one of the winners--thanks Amanda Jean!  The other 3 bundles will have equally cute but different fabrics.

2. Batting-Twin Size Hobbs Heirloom Cotton Batting
3. Thread-the Essential Thread Set in Neutrals or Colors from Connecting Threads

4. Pins-you know you can never have too many pins.
 5. My New Favorite Tool-One roll of Heat Press for putting smaller pieces of batting together.

6. Book- 'In a Twinkle' book by Kay Mackenzie

** The value of each Charity Quilter's Basics Bundle is about $70!!

So this is what you need to do to enter--PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!!

1. FOR THREE ENTRIES: If you have EVER sent Margaret's Hope Chest anything (fabric, top, finished quilt)
or been a 'Wrapped in Hope' volunteer quilter leave a comment and tell us how you have helped.
2. FOR TWO ENTRIES: Send us any unfinished quilt top before the end of April (make sure it is clean and usable).  Come on, you know you have AT LEAST one quilt top laying around that you may or may not finish.  We love forgotten quilt tops! Send it to us--we will finish it and give it a new life with a very deserving person. Any size.  Leave a comment telling us you are sending us a top.
3. FOR ONE ENTRY: Just leave a comment--any comment (as long as it is nice of course).
4. FOR ONE ENTRY: Share the love--Do a really quick (or long if you prefer ;)) post on your blog or on your Facebook or Twitter account, call your mom or friend from your quilting bee--just share the information about this post with someone else and BINGO another entry. Leave a comment and tell me who you shared it with.

So all together you have the potential of having 7 entries.
By the way, besides the fabric that Amanda Jean donated MHC paid for all of the giveaway items out of our own pockets (don't tell my husband)--no one is paying me to give away these things.

So to sum up so far,  enter the giveaway---tell others about the giveaway, look for a quilt top to send us, send us the quilt top (this seems to be the hardest part!), and come back here on April 29 to see if you are one of the 4 winners!

***When leaving comments--make sure I have a way to contact you if you win!!!
**and just because I know someone will ask....YES, you can send us a finished quilt instead of a quilt top and still get the entries--we will happily accept it!

  1. This is really exciting news! Congratulations and I'll be praying that God will bless you in the next few weeks with peace and calm --and moving mercies too?? Anyway - here are my entries for the contest: I've sent two quilts for the Christmas project a couple years ago, I've sent one quilt to a child of a prisoner. I'll be sending you a couple of finished quilts in the next few days, and I'm going to my facebook site right now to share with my quilting friends. That plus this comment makes me eligible for 7 entries, right? Love you and the work you do in Christ's name.

  2. Congrats on the big news! I've sent in a quilt and sent a quilt to a child of a prisoner.

  3. Way to go! So very exciting! I made a quilt for a Wrapped in Hope child. She should receive it in just a couple of days! Her birthday is this week.

  4. Congratulations on getting some well deserved publicity for your project! I hope that through the tv show you will get many more volunteers and it will take way less than 4 more years to hit another 1,000 quilts for the kids.

I've sent you one quilt top and hope to be able to send more in the future. I'm busy now with my own project of sending 1,000 quilts to Japan for the children who have suffered much. Blessings to you in your efforts to provide comfort.

  5. This is so fun! I sent out a notice of your blog on my facebook last night! I have been blogging my progress on the two Wrapped in Hope quilt that I finished and sent this week. I really have enjoyed helping with this and hope to help in the future. And I will tune in to see you on The Talk! So exciting!

  6. Congrats! What a lovely way to celebrate. Fellow Michigander here de-lurking to comment. :) I made my first quilt in fall 2009 for your project in conjunction with Craft Hope, and I have made six more since. So, I have you to thank for the start of my newest hobby! Love what you do!

  7. Oh CONGRATULATIONS!!! All the sutff about reaching 1,000 quilts and the give away are great, but just think of how your reach could be extended by your appearance on a national television show! Woohoo! I'll be praying for your nerves to be calm that day. ;- )

Let's see... I've sent at least four quilts. Or it will be at least four by the end of this year. I made a Wrapped in Hope quilt last year and have sent two or three other quilts for you to distribute. I'm on the list to make another Wrapped in Hope quilt this year (Dec.)

I'll stop back and leave another comment after I've spread the word somehow (just did a blog post or I would do that right now). And I've got to go looking for that elusive quilt top you claim I have laying around here somewhere...!

  8. Congrats! Just a few weeks back I sent my first box of finished qilts and one top to MHC. Hoping to send along another box come time this summer. Thank you for all your hardwork!

  9. Wow Karen, national TV is very big news (if it is broadcast in Canada, then it is international TV, right?) and I'm so happy for you both and for all the potential this holds for MHC. I have no doubt in my mind that you will be a faithful witness and that you will be able to present MHC to many people with clarity and grace. You might reach your 2000th quilt earlier that you think!

I've sent in one quilt so far and if I win this contest, I'll be able to send another ;)

  14. What great news, congratulations on the delivery of your 1000th quilt and the upcoming tv show.

My donations have all been finished quilts, totaling 11 right now. 2 were for your Hope Squared project. 3 for kids on the Wrapped in Hope 2010 list and 4 more for the Wrapped in Hope 2011kids. I have also donated 2 completed quilts designed specifically for boys when you said you had a need for them.

I try to promote MHC when I post my donation quilt photos on Flicker. I've shared your website and your flicker page with several friends, some co-workers and my family.

    Keep up the good work.

I'll be sharing your message with my Facebook friends.

I know this is alot of work for you and your mom but you are touching soooo many lives. We are all blessed to be part of your efforts.

  49. Congratulations and warm wishes to you and your mother. So many quilters sharing in their own communities and reaching across the ocean to aid those in need. God Bless You and all who assist you.
You inspire the best in creative people: to use our talents to bless others.
Have not sent to you but have sent to other charities and, also, given locally.
I am bookmarking you under Charity Quilts and will send you a quilt or two after our Japan push is done. But when will that need ever be over? Again, blessings to you.

  50. This is so great - I loved the idea when I first read about it and love how God has moved in the hearts of so many. I love that when I worked on the first of two quilts for a set of twins I was able to pray for that boy and his life - I'm on to starting the second quilt for their birthday in July and will be sending off some string blocks, too.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Way to go! That is a lot of quilting and a lot of love!

  53. I hadn't heard of your charity until today. I was reading Crazy Mom Quilts and she mentioned you. I have a stack of quilt tops that have been looming over me - paralyzing me with the amount of time they would take to complete. I am soooo excited to send 5 of them off to you wonderful people so they can do what they were made to do.
I also have some novelty prints that someone gave me that I just don't have inspiration to use. They would be great for kids and so into the box they go!
I am so very happy to have found you :)

  54. What an a mazing number of things you have done. I don'tg have a child appropriate quilt right now unless you want a baby quilt in wild colors I made from the test squares for my daughters quilt. By wild I mean not good wild. I drew all the colors from the same collection, they just don;t look good together.

  66. Once you hit the airways, I think you will be bombarded with help because MHC is such a heartfelt project.
I have sent 2 quilts to MHC and put it on my calendar as something I want to do each year. I find myself thinking and praying for the family all the time I am preparing the quilt. When I share the story of what I am doing with others, they are just as touched as I am. Seems like such a simple thing to do, and yet has so much impact. Thank you for the opportunity to share in this love.

I posted a post on my blog to spread the word. I don't have quilt tops, because I'm just not good at that. I do sow, but I have a very old sewing machine on which I am learning to sow a bit better than I am now. So sorry that I can't send any quilt.

  96. What exciting news this is! I'm a proud newcomer to Margaret's Hope Chest -- I came across your web site very accidentally (while reading a quilting blog). My three quilts for "birthday kids" are in the planning stages. My passion for quilting is making quilts for kids in need -- and I've done many, so this fits right in! I've passed your site on to friends in my local quilting circle. Keep up the good work!

  111. My daughter moved to Grand Rapids (from California) to raise a family many years ago. It is a really great place. When I read about what you had done in your grandmother's honor a few months ago, via amandajean, I thought, wow. So many great ideas have come from this small town, it's a wonderful community! God is good all the time; all the time, God is good.

When I have something to send I will. I read about quilting more than I actually quilt!

Congratulations on your milestone, 1000 quilts. And I look forward to seeing you on the Mother's Day special. God bless you all!

    ReplyDelete
  112. I have sent 4 quilts to Wrapped in Hope kids so far (LOVE this program, by the way!) Can't wait to see you on The Talk! Please let us know the date, so I can TiVo it :)

  113. I haven't donated to your cause.
I donate to Project Linus and due to budget I can't add another cause (even a great one like yours)
Our local Project Linus did do a drive and donated quilts to a the kids of inmates at a local womens prision. I was fortunate enough to get to go along and let the inmate see the quilt (made as close as poss to the childs likes)and help them write a message to enclose with the quilt.
Guess I need to win the lottery (which I don't play) so I can quit work, stay home and sew for charities. After all God gave us the gift to do it so it's only fair to share our gift.

I will be sending a quilt top and I have shared about MHC on my FB page. It is so wonderful to be a part of a group that is joining God in His work; may He receive all the glory!

  117. I'm so glad that you help people with the gift of quilts.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I have never heard of your organization but what a wonderful idea. Now I'll have to see if I have any unfinished quilt tops lying around!

    ReplyDelete
  119. Each time I read your blog name I think of my mother, Margaret, and the many quilts she's made and given away. I'm a relatively new quilter and have made a batch of lap quilts for our church to donate. It's so small compared to all that your group has done. Congratulations on reaching the gi-normous milestone of One Thousand quilts and four years of work. Best Wishes for a great show with your Mom!

    ReplyDelete
  120. For my second entry, I definitely told my mother Margaret about your groups achievements. God is good ALL the time. Congratulations.

  122. I DID a top to send! So far I haven't found the address (I'm sure I have it around here somewhere); can you please email it to me?

    ReplyDelete
  123. What a great inspiring post! I have not yet made a quilt but this inspires me to at least try, i do make toys for charity however, and that is my sewing experience.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Thanks for a chance to win, I have blogged about it.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Congrats on the show.

My girls loved the quilts, they received them last year. You all are a huge blessing for me and my family. So giving and talented. Thank you again for everything.

  126. Wow - what an amazing milestone! Many congratulations and thank you for the giveaway.

  127. Good luck with the show appearance, I can only imagine how nerve racking that is for you guys. I am sure you will do great though! You guys are doing wonderful things for people all over with giving them quilts and I am sure your appearance on the show will only increase how many people you touch.

  133. CONGRATS on one THOUSAND quilts donated! What a fabulous accomplishment! I appreciate finding a place that I can send quilt tops to -- no longer have an easy time of sandwiching and sewing the whole thing together, so that is good news.

  138. AND, I'd love to win some yellow pins so this will be my entry of "just leaving a comment" and saying something nice:

You guys have done a spectacular job and it's so wonderful to be able to read and hear about the people whose lives have been touched through your generosity. Go MHC!!

  139. Hi MHC Team,
Very exciting post! I couldn't help but brag about your cool opportunity to talk about your experience, your mission and your work on tv (and my big question for Tony was: "What do you think she's going to wear???" To which he said nothing, but definitely rolled his eyes...)

It's been a blessing to be able to be part of your message of hope. I sent you the one and only quilt I have ever made, to support your winter drive for homeless students in the Grand Rapids School District. Quilting and thinking about the cause really reminded me of how fortunate our family has been--how much we have to be grateful for.

Thanks and best wishes for the next thousand quilts.

    Love,
    Christene

  146. Wow, 1000 quilts in 4 years is pretty mind blowing stuff. Congratulations. I am very new to the quilting world, haven't even finished my first block for my first quilt yet. But I am amazed by the generosity of spirit, the kindness and the friendship I have found both in the real world and in the blogging world of quilters and embroiderers. It is such a blessing in my life and hopefully I can bless others as I travel along this path. Will definitely be following Margaret's Hope Chest and seeing if I can help as I get some finished quilt tops I can share.

  147. I have a fiber art group I go to (very casual in the garden of a friend) and I will definitly mention this to the quilting ladies when I see them this week.

  149. Congratulations! What an extraordinary accomplishment. This is my first time hearing about Margaret's Hope Chest (information received through Crazy Mom Quilts blog) and I put a quilt top in the mail to you earlier today. I made that top about a year ago and it has been sitting in a closet, waiting for a home. After reading about your organization I thought it would much more appreciated if I gave it to you to share. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your mission!

  189. This post is dedicated to my Great Grandmother Nanny Frost who passed away at the dear age of 90. My fond memories of her quilts brought tears to my eyes as I'm reading this blog. The joy your quilts bring to others will continue to touch their hearts as my Great Grandmothers have mine!
It is my wish to learn how to quilt, to show my daughters & continue our families heritage for many generations on.

I will be sure to share this on my blog and site: AskaNurseNow.info as we focus on nurturing the soul as a part of improving ones health. Giving to others has been proven to be a key to happiness and general well-being. Wishing you all best of luck!
